AL reverting to 'Rakkhi Bahini culture': Moudud
Saturday, 17 July 2010
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) senior leader Moudud Ahmed has said the present government was using the law enforcers to suppress opposition.
He said that the Awami League-led government had again resorted to the 'Rakkhi Bahini culture,' just like in the past. The Jatiyo Rakkhi Bahini was a controversial political militia force formed in 1975 with a status of an elite force and was assigned to recover arms from the civilians, reports bdnews24.com.
Moudud was addressing a discussion on 'Torture in Custody and Human Rights'.
The Combined Professionals' Forum organised the discussion at the National Press Club Friday.
Harshly criticising the government for torture in custody, Moudud said, "There is no democracy in the country. This kind of activities proves that the government is no different from the illegal caretaker government."
Moudud urged the people to unite against the government and compel it to resign.
Referring to the activities of Rakkhi Bahini, the BNP leader said, "Awami League could not come to power for 21 years because of its past misdeeds. They are showing the tendency again."
As long as the government fails to control associate bodies like Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Jatiyo Juba League, the law and order situation of the country would not improve, Moudud claimed.
Dhaka University (DU) teachers Mahbub Ullah and Mujahidul Islam, president of a portion of the Dhaka Federal Journalists' Union Ruhul Amin Gazi and former secretary ASM Solaiman Chowdhury, among others, attended the meeting.
