Bangladesh Awami League (AL) welcomed Tuesday the International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) verdict handing down death penalty to Jamaat-e-Islami leader ATM Azharul Islam for committing crimes against humanity in 1971, reports BSS.
"We welcome the verdict. We think it has fulfilled the people's expectation," publicity and publication affairs secretary of the ruling party Hassan Mahmud said in a press briefing at the party president's Dhanmondi office.
He said there were speculations about the fate of the war crimes trials as initiatives were taken to expose to justice the perpetrators of 1971 war crimes.
"Defying all red eyes the trial process began, verdicts were delivered and the judgments are being executed," Mahmud said.
