AL to arrange detained Hasina's treatment in USA if govt agrees: Zillur

Sunday, 17 February 2008

Awami League (AL) acting president Zillur Rahman Saturday said, if the government agrees, the party would arrange the treatment of Sheikh Hasina's ears in USA, badly damaged by the impact of grenade blast at her rally on August 21, 2004, reports agencies.
"Her eye treatment is possible in Dhaka but her ear treatment is only possible in the USA where she was treated earlier," acting party president Zillur Rahman told reporters after presiding over an unscheduled meeting of the presidium at his Gulshan residence.
Awami League president Shiekh Hasina, detained in a makeshift jail in parliament building complex in connection with 'extortion' cases, has been suffering from various health complications, including high blood pressure and ear and eye problems.
Zillur Rahman said Awami League would bear the expenses of Hasina's treatment abroad. He said it is not correct that a prisoner cannot be sent abroad for medical treatment. He said JSD leader ASM Abdur Rab while in jail was sent abroad for treatment.
Awami League acting president Zillur Rahman has seriously questioned law adviser AF Hassan Ariff's recent comment that the next polls could be held amid the state of emergency.
Zillur said Saturday that the adviser's comment was "unexpected".
"We are shocked and astonished by the comment by the law adviser when the chief adviser favours lifting the state of emergency for elections."
"We did not expect such a comment from him."
Responding to the Law Adviser's remarks that the elections could be possible under the state of emergency, Zillur said when the Chief Adviser, the Chief Election Commissioner and the Chief of the Army Staff time and again committed that the emergency would be lifted before the elections, the Law Adviser's comments were disappointing.
AL presidium member Tofael Ahmed told reporters that the party presidium would meet on February 22 and the working committee on Feb 24 to discuss their stand on the second round of dialogue with the Election Commission.
He said it must be ensured that the EC's move for delimitation of constituencies did not impede the elections according to the roadmap.
The presidium meeting was attended, among others, by Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Amir Hossain Amu, Tofael Ahmed, Matia Chowdhury, Kazi Zafrullah and Syed Ashraful Islam.
