TUNGIPARA, Aug 14 (UNB): Awami League (AL) central leadership Thursday said if voted to power at the next polls, they would build a democratic and non-communal Bangladesh with the spirit of the 1972 Constitution to materialise the ideals of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
They swore the fresh pledge while placing wreaths at the mazar of Bangladesh's founding father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman marking the 33rd anniversary of his demise as hundreds of party leaders and workers from Gopalganj, Bagerhat, Khulna and Barisal also gathered to pay homage to the slain leader.
Awami League presidium members Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Amir Hossain Amu, Abdur Razzak, Tofail Ahmed, Suranjit Sengupta and Matia Chowdhury and acting general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam were on the party delegation from Dhaka. Khulna Mayor-elect Talukdar Abdul Khaleque and Barisal Mayor-elect Shaukat Hossain Hiron were present.
They placed wreaths and offered fateha at Bangabandhu's mazar at about 12.00 noon and joined a milad mahfil at the complex, a day before the commemoration of the 15th of August as National Mourning Day at state level through its restoration by court orders.
Talking to journalists, Amir Hossain Amu thanked the High Court (HC) and the caretaker government (CG) for restoring August 15 as National Mourning Day and public holiday, cancelled by the past BNP-Jamaat coalition government.
"This decision has reflected aspiration of the people at home and freedom-loving people of the world. After the HC verdict there is no obstacle for the CG to declare Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Father of the Nation," he said.
Amu demanded permanent release of party chief and Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina, full lifting of the state of emergency and the holding of parliamentary elections first.
In reply to a question, Amu said as per the party decision, they would not accept Upazila Parishad election before general election. He expressed the hope that the Election Commission (EC) would hold the general election in December as per its roadmap and debar war criminals from the election race.
The AL leader said issues like lifting emergency and holding parliamentary elections first would be resolved during the second round of dialogue with the CG.
Tofail Ahmed said they would implement the ideals of the slain Bangabandu and build his 'Golden Bangla' under the leadership of ex-premier and AL chief Sheikh Hasina.
