AL to join dialogue even if ban on indoor politics continues: Amu

Saturday, 1 September 2007

Awami League (AL) will have to join the election process, as it is the only way to free party chief Sheikh Hasina, said Amir Hossain Amu, a senior member of the party presidium, reports UNB.
"To free our leader Sheikh Hasina, we've to go to state power. And for that election is mandatory and Awami League will have to join the election process," he said while talking to reporters at his Eskaton residence in the city Friday.
Expressing views that differ from those of party's acting president Zillur Rahman about joining dialogue with the Election Commission (EC) on reform issues, Amu said the AL should sit with the EC for dialogue so that the government could not blame the party for non-cooperation and delaying the election process.
He has termed Zillur's statement that it is not possible to sit with the Election Commission without freeing Sheikh Hasina as a comment of emotion.
"There is no doubt among us about joining dialogue with Election Commission on reform issues and we will join the dialogue even if ban on indoor politics is not withdrawn," he said.
The AL leader said if necessary, they would discuss the issue among the party leaders prior to sitting with the EC.
Amu, known as a reformist leader of the party, said: "Awami League will not survive without joining election and we've to realise the reality."
He accused Jamaat-e-Islami of repression on women, killing, smuggling, looting and patronising militant fundamentalists and demanded of the government to take appropriate action against them.
