AL to legitimise CG's justified works if voted to power: Zillur

Saturday, 27 September 2008

Awami League (AL) acting president Zillur Rahman Friday said they, if voted to power, would legitimise those work of the caretaker government (CG) that are justified, reports UNB .
But they are not sure whether the CG system would be continued or be abolished.
"Only time will fix the fate of the caretaker system," Zillur told journalists at his Gulshan residence when a delegation of Bangabandhu Shangskritik Jote (BSJ) met him on the occasion of its 28th founding anniversary.
He said a CG cannot be a long-term system in a democracy. Zillur was highly critical of the government as it failed to stop the price spirals of essentials.
He renewed his party's demand for deferring the dates of the upazila elections as he said it will be difficult for the political parties and politicians to take part in those elections in quick successions.
Meanwhile, addressing an iftar party arranged by the party in honour of diplomatic corps at a city hotel, Zillur pledged to continue the drive against corruption in a lawful and impartial manner.
But, he said, AL never supports drive against politics in the name of anti-corruption drive.
About institutional reform, he said, "It was in fact our demand and we'll continue it."
He demanded immediate permanent release of Sheikh Hasina saying it has become impossible for the party to move ahead without Hasina's release. "It's essential to create a congenial atmosphere ahead of the elections."
Welcoming the date for the parliamentary polls on December 18, he said the elections must be held on the declared date and hoped to see all the political parties contesting the elections.
Zillur urged the foreign friends to gear up their assistance and efforts for rapid and sustainable development of Bangladesh to turn the country into a middle-income country by 2020.
Speaking on the occasion, Dean of diplomatic corps Dora Dora Rapold described the present socio-political situation in Bangladesh as a "crucial time of history".
"Bangladesh faces immense challenges to hold a free and fair election at this time of history," she told the function.
She said Bangladesh has no option but to restore a functional democracy and parliament through a fair competition and without violence.
The Ambassadors of the United States, the UK, the European Union, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Japan and China and other countries, and AL's senior leaders, among others, attended the Iftar party.
