AL to pay for Jan 7 election: Farroque

FE REPORT | Sunday, 11 February 2024

A BNP leader said on Saturday that the Awami League will have to pay the price decades to decades to come for killing democracy by holding farcical elections in the country.
Zainul Abedin Farroque, a member of the Chairperson's Advisory Council, conveyed this message during a human chain programme.
Farroque also cautioned the ruling party against underestimating the BNP, emphasizing that the party, with its significant popularity among the people, could stage a comeback on the streets at any time.
The human chain event, held in front of the National Press Club, aimed to demand the immediate release of detained opposition leaders, including BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
Farroque's remarks were prompted by Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader's statement, stating that the BNP would pay the price for not participating in the elections held on January 7, 2024.
"Awami League must be held accountable for tarnishing the historical record with farcical elections in 2014, 2018, and 2024," Farroque said adding that the people of the country would not permit the government to remain in power, regardless of the conspiracies it may be hatching.
Furthermore, he emphasised that the citizens of Bangladesh no longer desire elections under a ruling party government.
Meanwhile, BNP's organizing secretary, Syed Imran Saleh Prince, was released from prison on bail.
Arrested on November 4, 2023, he emerged from Kashimpur Jail around 1:00 pm and headed directly to his residence in Kalabagan, the capital, as reported by the party's media cell member, Shairul Kabir Khan.
