KHULNA, Dec 18 (UNB): Awami League president Sheikh Hasina Thursday pledged that if voted to power, her government would reactivate Mongla Port and construct a deep seaport close to Mongla, which will be opened up for South Asian countries in particular.
Addressing a big election rally at Khulna Circuit House ground, she said new industries will be set up in Khulna which virtually lost its character as industrial town following the closure of a number jute mills and factories.
Hasina said she would set up a power station in Khulna for smooth supply of power to industries and introduce rationing system for all workers. "We'll revive Khulna as industrial hub with new mills and factories."
She also promised construction of the Padma Bridge to improve communications of the southwestern region with capital Dhaka within the shortest possible time.
Hasina said during her rule, the Khulna shipyard was handed over to the Navy and it is now operating well and making profit.
She criticised the BNP-Jamaat's previous rule when eight mills and factories were shut down rendering thousands of workers jobless. Besides, she said, Sheikh Abu Naser Specialised Hospital in Khulna aided by the government of Spain was closed down to build Ziaur Rahman Hospiatl in Bogra with equipment from the specialised hospital.
The Awami League chief said the BNP-led alliance government did not give anything to the people other than corruption and terrorism. They plundered Tk 20,000 crore from the power sector without generating a single megawatt, she alleged.
It is the Awami League government that installed a private barge mounted power plant, Hasina said.
She recalled how "Awami League leaders and journalists were killed in Khulna city after the BNP-led alliance government assumed power." People were fed up with terrorism and corruption, she said.
At the rally, Hasina introduced Awami League candidates Mizanur Rahman Mizan contesting from Khulna-2 and Munnujan Sufian from Khulna-3. She earlier addressed a rally at Khuder Battola seeking vote for Molla Jalauddin contesting from Khulna-4.
