AL wins 3 seats, BNP 2, JP 1 in by-polls

The ruling Awami League (AL) won three seats while BNP and Jatiya Party (JP) bagged two and one respectively in the by-polls held Thursday in Rangpur, Kurigram, Kishoreganj and Bogra districts, report agencies.
AL candidate Abul Kalam Azad bagged Rangpur-6 with 1,12,721 votes in 98 polling centres, election official Subhash Chandra Roy said. His nearest rival, BNP candidate Noor Muhammad Mandal, got 35,897 votes.
AL's Nazmul Hasan Papon won Kishorganj-6 with 106,137 votes in 111 polling centres. His nearest rival, BNP candidate Shariful Alam, bagged 68,327 votes.
AL's Md Zafar Ali won Kurigram-2 with 1,40,748 votes in 152 polling centres. Jatiya
Party candidate Golam Habib Dulal was runner up with 46,616 votes, followed by BNP candidate Tazul Islam Chowdhury with 12,915 votes.
BNP candidate Barrister Jamir Uddin Sircar (1,39,531 votes) won Bogra-6 (Sadar) seat by defeating his only rival Alhaj Mamtaz Uddin (53,430 votes) of Awami League.
BNP candidate Barrister Moudud Ahmed (1,75,793 votes) defeated his only rival Dr Mostafa Alam Nannu (97,257 votes) of Awami League in Bogra-7 (Gabtoli-Shahjahanpur) seat.
Mahajote candidate Begum Rowshan Ershad (87,847 votes) of Jatiya Party won Rangpur-3 (Sadar) seat by defeating her nearest rival BNP candidate Alhaj Rahim Uddin Bharsha (25,524 votes).
A total of seventeen candidates were contesting in Thursday's by-elections to Bogra- 6 and 7, Rangpur- 3 and 6, Kurigram -2 and Kishoreganj-6 seats.
Election commissioner M Sohul Hussain estimated around 50-60 per cent of the 1,842,000 registered voters cast their ballots in the six constituencies.
"Polling was peaceful in most areas," said Hossain.
