BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed has said that the ruling party will not be allowed to hold public rallies in any place of the country. ‘Awami League will not be allowed to hold rallies in any place either,’ the BNP joint secretary general said apparently in response to AL Joint General Secretary’s remarks that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will not be allowed to hold any rally in the future if she does not apologise on behalf of the party’s senior vice chairman for making offensive comments on Bangabandhu. Rizvi came up with a response to the remarks of a ruling party leader while addressing a press conference at the BNP’s Nayapaltan central office in the city on Sunday. Rizvi said the government found itself in trouble after the people of Gazipur spontaneously observed the 20-party alliance’s daylong hartal in the district and the support extended by the people to the nationwide general strike called for Monday by the coalition. The BNP-led 20-party alliance had imposed a dawn-to-dusk shutdown in Gazipur on Saturday and announced on Thursday that the opposition parties would impose a nationwide daylong hartal on Monday. Addressing the journalists, Rizvi alleged that the government was framing BNP leaders and workers in false cases, attacking their houses and arresting them. The BNP leader also called on everyone to make Monday’s nationwide lockdown a success. Earlier, AL leader Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif said that time has come to think whether BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will be allowed to hold any rally in the future if she does not apologise on behalf of her elder son’s insulting comments on Bangabandhu. ‘Awami League won’t tolerate the way Tarique Rahman and BNP leaders making disparaging remarks on Bangabandhu,’ Hanif said while addressing a follow-up programme after attending a joint meeting with Jubo League leaders at the Awami League President’s political office at Dhanmondi on Saturday.
