AL won't hand over power peacefully: BNP
FE REPORT | Monday, 9 October 2023
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) warned on Sunday that the ongoing political stalemate will be settled on the streets as the government doesn't believe in handing over power peacefully through free, fair and participatory elections.
BNP standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury made the observation at a discussion at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in the capital's Segunbagicha area.
"Awami League would never hand over power peacefully through a free, fair and peaceful election," he said.
"Those who believe that Sheikh Hasina (PM) will hand over power through peaceful and fair elections do live in fool's paradise," he said.
"So, it will be resolved on the roads. There would be a national government in future," he stated.
He stressed the need for a greater unity among the people if we want to rescue the country from the present situation.
"The courts usually don't give bail, the Election Commission (EC) would not hold free, fair and participatory elections, banks would not hold anyone responsible for plundering public money, because we live under a fascist regime," he said.
Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury further said that the EC is part of government plan to rig the upcoming polls.
He said that many judges intended to show their loyalty to the ruling party. He said many even could not get bail even in 10 years.
"The caretaker government was formed upon the consensus of all political parties. But the ruling Awami League has cancelled the caretaker government provision which is illegal and they don't have that right," he maintained.
Joint secretary general of BNP Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal termed the ruling Awami League as a fraud party.
Member secretary of AB Party Mojibur Rahman Manju said that it is not possible for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to come to power again through free, fair and participatory elections.
