Alam Bolee champion again

CHITTAGONG, Apr 25: Alam Bolee of Teknaf has become champion of Jabbar's Bolee Khela (wrestling competition) for the second consecutive time. In the final bout Alam defeated Jashim Bolee from Comilla within two minutes of the start of first round. The duo moved to the final from among 68 contestants at primary, quarter-final and semi-final rounds. Chittagong City Corporation Mayor M Manjur Alam distributed medals and other prizes among the winners as the chief guest while senior officials from the local administration and metropolitan police were present. The wrestling competition takes place every year on the 12th of Baishakh of Bangla calendar at the Laldighi Maidan in the heart of the port city. On the occasion of the Bolee Khela, several thousand makeshift shops have been erected over three square kilometres area while traffic movement on all city routes leading to Laldighi Maidan is to remain suspended for three days from yesterday. Abdul Jabbar Sawdagar, a local businessman, introduced the Abdul Jabbar Bolee Khela and Baishakhi Mela in the year 1909. Since then the annual traditional festival draws massive crowd from the rural areas of Chittagong and Cox's Bazar districts and the hill districts of Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban.
