NILPHAMARI, Mar 23: Alfa Agro Ltd, a private agro entrepreneur in the district has produced a huge amount of breeder-potato seeds this year.
The local farmers are using non-seed potatoes in potato cultivation due to non-availability of quality potato seeds.
Non-seed potatoes are very vulnerable as they retain various virus and diseases. Sources said this year Alfa Agro Ltd produced 200 tonnes of breeder potato seeds which were totally virus-free because they had used German technology 'Elisa Kits' in producing them.
When contacted, Debashish Chandra, head of research and development of Alfa Agro, said, " We have planted tissue cultured plantlets using new technology which would eliminate such viruses like PVX, PVY and PVLR, etc.''
This big venture will increase potato production in the region, sources added.
