Saturday, 15 December 2007
All the seven Birshreshthos-war heroes’ posthumously conferred with the highest gallantry award for their role in the freedom struggle-are now in Bangladesh on the eve of this year's Victory Day celebrations, reports bdnews24.com.
The nation has been pining since December 16, 1971 for the mortal remains of two of her most valiant sons, Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman and Sepoy Hamidur Rahman who spilled their blood fighting for Bangladesh in the 1971 War of Independence.
Finally, after almost four decades into independence the two were interned in the soil of their beloved homeland.
The other five Birshreshthos: Sepoy Mohammad Mostafa Kamal, Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir, Lance Naik Munshi Abdur Rouf, Artificer Ruhul Amin and Noor Mohammad Sheikh received proper burials in their own soil in 1971.
The remains of Matiur were brought in from the Mashrur Air Base in Pakistan on June 24, 2006 and buried at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial graveyard in Mirpur.
The remains of Sepoy Hamidur Rahman were brought back from India's Tripura state on June 11 and buried with state honours beside Matiur at the same burial ground Tuesday.
