All necessary steps taken to ensure credible polls: CA

Chief Adviser (CA) Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed Sunday said his caretaker government has taken all necessary measures to hold a free, fair and credible general election today (Monday), reports UNB.
"All along I have spoken about holding a free, fair and credible election and that election is going to be held tomorrow (Monday)," the CA was quoted as telling Cassem Uteem, head of the visiting Commonwealth Election Observer Team for Bangladesh Parliament Election.
"For this I have said whatever necessary we will do and we have done it," Fakhruddin was quoted as saying by CA's Press Secretary Syed Fahim Munaim after the meeting.
Cassem Uteem, accompanied by two other members of his team, made a courtesy call on the Chief Adviser at the CA's office Sunday morning.
Fakhruddin said he promised to hold the election freely, fairly and credibly and that is what is going to be held in a good environment as per the expectation of the countrymen.
In this regard, the CA referred to various reforms introduced by his caretaker government, including those concerning electoral rules and regulations and code of conduct. He said people have reacted positively to changed culture of election campaigns and other related things in view of the reforms.
Fakhruddin reiterated that the Election Commission (EC) is fully prepared to hold the parliamentary election tomorrow, saying the government had extended total support to the EC to ensure a fair election. In this context, he also expressed his happiness over the performance of the EC.
Fakhruddin said the Commonwealth Election Observer team had come at a good time to see the final phase of transition to democracy.
Commonwealth team leader Cassem Uteem expressed the happiness for the withdrawal of the state of emergency and hoped the election would be held in a good environment. He said his team would observe the voting objectively and submit an interim report.
