FE REPORT | Tuesday, 15 October 2024
BNP chairperson's adviser Amanullah Aman assured on Monday that their party would provide all-out support to the interim government for holding a free, fair and participatory national election within the shortest possible time after completing reforms of the Election Commission (EC).
He made the assurance at a discussion titled '90s student-mass uprising to 2024 student-people movement' organised by Bangladesh Youth Forum (BYF) at the National Press Club in the capital.
The event was organised marking the death anniversary of Saifuddin Ahmed Moni, one of the masterminds of the 90s student-mass uprising.
President of BYF Muhammad Saidur Rahman presided over the event.
"We have fought long 16 years for restoring democracy in the country. We have achieved our independence in exchange of blood of millions of students and people. We want to cooperate with the interim government for holding a free, fair and participatory election as early as possible," he continued.
"We shouldn't allow this government to fail," he said.
Mr Amanullah Aman who also served as a former vice-president of Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) said, "A commission has been formed to bring reforms in the Election Commission. After getting the commission's report, the Election Commission must be reconstituted for holding a free, fair and participatory national election."
"State power must be transferred to those who will be elected by the people of the country. The power will be handed over to the elected public representatives," he maintained.
"The future government of the country will be the government of the people. We must be united and move forward," he stated.
Former member of parliament and also AGS of DUCSU Nazimuddin Alam said that BNP had contributed to the student-people movement during July-August 2024 like the student- mass uprising during 90's.
"Compromise will not be possible with those who have killed students and people during July-August 2024 revolution against Sheikh Hasina. If needed, we will again come out on streets," he said.
Chief coordinator of like-minded nationalist alliance and chairman of NPP Fariduzzaman Farhad said that the people of the country were not in a good state due to soaring prices of essential commodities.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said on Monday that the interim government should have taken advance measures to tackle dengue.
He made the comment at a press briefing on public awareness in preventing dengue at the party's Nayapaltan headquarters in the capital.
"It is not the time of Sheikh Hasina. Her nephew (Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh) was the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation. He utilised the godown allocated for preserving dengue medicines but it was used for other purposes. There was no medicine at the godown," he said.
"As they (Awami League) were committing massive corruption, so it is possible for them to do that work (corruption). But the present government has public support," he said.
He said that the intensity and duration of dengue prevail between July and November.
