All steps taken to hold CCC polls: Sohul
Wednesday, 16 June 2010
Election Commissioner Sohul Hossain said that the Election Commission (EC) has taken all measures to hold Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) election in a free, fair and acceptable manner, reports BSS.
Talking to journalists at the EC secretariat Tuesday, he said the army started patrolling the CCC areas. Thirty-four teams of the army are working there.
He said the defeated party always brings allegation that the election was not free and fair. This kind of culture must be discarded, he added.
The election commissioner said the poll laws should be amended to hold the local body polls on party basis, because the non-party elections cannot rise above the party influence.
Mr Hossain goes to Chittagong today (Wednesday) to see the last minute preparations for CCC polls.
Meanwhile, a three-member delegation of BNP led by party's Standing Committee member MK Anwar called on Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Dr ATM Shamsul Huda and demanded that the voters be allowed to come to polling centres unhindered during the CCC polls.
The BNP delegation demanded holding voting from morning to afternoon without any break and the presence of at least one election commissioner in Chittagong on the day of polling.
Election commissioners Sohul Hossain and Sakhawat Hossain were present during the meeting.
Two other members of the BNP delegation were Standing Committee Members Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan and Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokan MP.
After the meeting, Mr Anwar said the members of army deployed in Chittagong should be more active. He urged the CEC to take immediate steps to tackle any untoward incident.
EC Public Relations Director Swapan Kumar Bhoumik said 34 observers from five foreign agencies would monitor the CCC polls.
Thirteen of them are from US embassy, two from British High Commission, five from Asia Foundation, six from NDI and eight from UNDP.
