FE Report
Around 190 million textbooks will be distributed among the primary and secondary students across the country within the first week of January 2010, said Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid Sunday.
"It's a big challenge for the government after the devastating fire at the National Curriculum Textbook Board (NCTB) depot at Tejgaon," he told reporters after the inaugural ceremony of DFID Global School Partnerships (DGSP) at the British Council auditorium in the city.
The minister said all the free textbooks will be positively distributed among the students before classes of the new education year start.
In a reply to a question he said the NCTB fire probe report is now with the police and it is their duty to find out the criminals.
He said the education policy is now at its final stage and we hope to implement it in the first phase of next year.
About eliminating illiteracy from the country the minister said, "The government has made girls' education free up to 12 grade, and has also taken initiatives to eliminate illiteracy fully from the country by 2014."
The Minister appreciated the DGSP initiative, under which 175 school links between Bangladesh and the UK schools will be developed by March 2012.
The international project is launched to help raise awareness of global development issues among children of three to 19 years, and provide them with guidance and professional development opportunities within the formal curriculum. Besides, the project also aims to develop the skills of the school teachers.
DGSP is a joint initiative of the British Council, Cambridge Education Foundation, UK One World Linking Association (UKOWLA) and Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), funded by the Department for International Development (DFID).
The 32 billion pound programme promotes and supports partnerships between 5,000 schools in the UK and schools in Africa, Asia, South America and the Caribbean countries.
