Alleged extortionist shot, injured in police firing

An alleged extortionist was injured in a gunfight with the police at Modhya Monipur of Mirpir in the city early Thursday, police said.
The injured was identified as Arif, 26.
Mirpur police conducted a drive at Modhya Monipur play-ground around 2:30am after being informed of the whereabouts of a gang of criminals, Zakir Hossain Mollah, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the police station, told the FE.
When the team reached the spot, the gang started firing gunshots at the law enforcers that forced them to retaliate.
"Arif was caught in the crossfire and wounded critically," the chief of the police station said.
Injured Arif was admitted to the Orthopedic Hospital for treatment.
A pistol and three rounds of bullet were recovered from the spot.
He said Arif was one of the wanted in a murder case filed with the police station a day earlier for the death of a construction worker at Modhya Monipur.
Meanwhile, an unidentified body of a 35-year-old man was recovered from Tejgaon industrial area in the early hours of Thursday.
An officer of Industrial police station said that they found the body on the road in front of Dhaka Polytechnic Institute at about 2:00am.
He said the man might have been gunned down a day or two day before and abandoned on the street later.
