Allocation for ultra-poor of N-region stressed

RAJSHAHI, Apr 30: A pre-budget workshop calling for special allocation of fund for the development of northern region was held at the auditorium of Rajshahi City Corporation Tuesday. Rajshahi Press club and Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC) jointly organised the workshop. Speakers at the workshop said, special priority should be given to the improvement of condition of poverty hit people of the N-region. They said out of forty million ultra-poor people, a major portion live in the northern region whereas the government has no special project or making any move to remove poverty of the people of this region. As a result, the numbers of poor people were increasing day by day in the region. They demanded special budgetary allocation for the poverty stricken people of northern region to alleviate poverty and to improve the condition of the people of the region. AHM Kahiruzzman Liton, Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation who attended the workshop as the special guest said, it was not possible either for the government or for the non-government organisations to alleviate poverty. Only a concerted effort and a combined initiative by the government and the non-government organisation through a planned programme can help alleviate poverty from the region. Presided over by Anwarul Alam Fatik, President of Rajshahi Press Club, the workshop was attended, among others by Shahin Akhter Reni, wife of RCC Mayor, MA Halim Mia, Policy Analyst of BRAC, Gaziul Alam, Deputy Civil Surgeon of Rajshahi, Kamal Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, President of Social Science Foundation as special guests.
