Almost all essentials' prices go up

Prices of sugar, lentil, imported garlic and ginger, edible oil were up while fish and vegetables remained steady in the city's kitchen markets, traders said Friday.
Prices of sugar have increased at the retail level as the government has proposed to impose duty on raw sugar and refined sugar at the rate of Tk 2,000 and Tk 4,000 per tonne respectively, sugar traders said.
Brand and non- brand sugar was selling between Tk 46 and Tk 54 per kg which was Tk 42- Tk 50 per kg a week ago.
Local garlic was selling at Tk 110 per kg while the imported variety was up by Tk 10 per kg selling at Tk 140 per kg.
Traders said, prices of imported ginger also witnessed an upward trend and it was selling at Tk 112 per kg, up from Tk 110 per kg in the previous week.
Local lentil was selling at Tk 110 per kg, up from Tk 106- Tk 108 per kg and the imported variety ranged between Tk 90 and Tk 100 per kg.
Local onion was selling at Tk 22 per kg while the imported variety was steady at Tk 18- Tk 19 per kg.
Traders said prices of edible oil increased at the retail level. They feared that the price might go up due to increased demand before the holy month of Ramadan.
The prices of Rupchanda and Teer brand edible oil increased by Tk 4.0 in five-litre containers and were Tk 434 and Tk 424 respectively last week while prices of ACI and Fresh oil was steady at Tk 420 last week.
The prices of non-brand edible oil such as palm oil, super palm oil and soybean oil ranged between Tk 80 and Tk 92, up from Tk 75-Tk 90 per litre.
Rice traders claimed that high prices of paddy were responsible for the recent hike of rice price in the last three weeks. They blamed millers' competition for buying paddy, which raised the prices of rice as rice price maintained the previous high trend.
Minicate was selling at Tk 42- Tk 44 per kg while Nazirshail remained steady at Tk 38-Tk 44 per kg at the retail level.
Coarse varieties also maintained the earlier high price. IRRI was selling at Tk 30- Tk 32 per kg, Pari at Tk 34 per kg and BR-28 at Tk 35 per kg at the retail level last week.
Prices of fish except hilsa remained steady in the city's kitchen markets, market sources said.
A pair of small-size hilsa was selling at Tk 1000 which was Tk 1000-Tk 1200 a week ago.
Shrimp was steady at Tk 400-Tk 450 per kg a week ago.
'Ruhi' was selling at Tk 180- Tk 200 per kg, 'katla' at Tk 200 per kg, 'Pangas' at Tk 80-Tk 100 per kg, 'Silver Carp' at Tk 200 per kg and 'Mrigel' at Tk 170 per kg in the city's kitchen markets.
Small fish 'telapia' was priced at Tk 130-Tk 150, 'puti' at Tk 200-Tk 300 and 'Tengra' at Tk 300-Tk 330 a kg on an average.
On the other hand, some vegetables like tomato were selling at previous high prices mainly due to off-season supply shortage, traders said.
Tomato sold at Tk 34- Tk38 per kg.
However, potato remained steady and was selling at Tk 12 per kg.
Prices of other vegetables remained more or less steady last week. Long bean (borboty) was selling at Tk 18-20 per kg, brinjal at Tk 28-Tk 30 per kg, okra at Tk 20 per kg, potal at Tk 16-Tk 18 per kg, papaya at Tk 16 per kg and a medium size gourd at Tk 20-25 last week.
Green chili was selling at Tk 40 per kg, market sources said.
The price of a dozen red farm eggs declined by Tk 6.0 and was Tk 69, while white eggs were steady at Tk 69 and local eggs at Tk 90.
A medium-size poultry bird was selling at Tk 145- Tk 150 per kg. Beef and mutton were Tk 250-Tk 260 per kg and Tk 350-Tk 360 per kg respectively.
