Thursday, 26 July 2007

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has extended by another seven working days the deadline for BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to submit her wealth statement, reports UNB.
The ACC has re-fixed the deadline for the former prime minister on August 7 following an application from her.
"Honourable former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia applied for the time extension and we've extended it by another seven working days," ACC Secretary Mokhles ur Rahman told reporters Wednesday afternoon.
Asked whether another former Prime Minister and Awami League president applied for the extension of her deadline, he said, the ACC has not yet received any such prayer from her. "There is still time in hand (for her to do so)," he added.
Hasina's lawyer Moniruzzaman told reporters Tuesday that she would apply for extension of the deadline.
Khaleda through her Lawyer Ahmed Aazam Khan applied for the time extension Monday. Today (Wednesday), Aazam came to the Commission for receiving the letter confirming the extension.
Emerging from the Commission with the confir mation letter, he told reporters, "Khaleda Zia has informed me that she is respectful to law. She wants to submit a perfect wealth statement to the ACC. Therefore, she needs more time." Accordingly, her deadline has been extended by another seven working days, Aazam added.
The ACC on July 17 issued notices to the two former prime ministers directing them to submit their wealth statements within seven working days. Kahleda's notice was sent to her cantonment residence while that of Hasina to her sub-jail through the prison authorities.
Khaleda received the notice the following day (July 18) and Hasina received it a day later because of a controversy over its (notice) language.
Meanwhile, former BNP minister Air Vice Marshall (retd) Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, who submitted his wealth statement to the Anti-Corruption Commission Wednesday along with some other corruption suspects, claimed that both his earning and spending in the last 35 years was exactly the same.
Former junior minister of Awami League Prof Rafiqul Islam, AL Religious Affairs secretary Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and former CBA leader Molla Abul Kalam Azad also submitted their wealth statements to the anti-corruption watchdog agency.
Abdullah submitted his wealth statement to ACC secretary Mokhles ur Rahman through his representative while other three corrupt suspects did so through jail authorities.
Altaf, who was in-charge of home and commerce ministries during the last BNP-Jamaat government, claimed in his statement that he has literally no surplus wealth.
His wealth statement titled '35 years at a glance' shows that he earned Tk 5,68,07,863 from 1973 to April 2007 and spent exactly the same amount during the period.
State Minister for Power of the last AL government (1996-2001) Rafiqul stated that among his significant wealth he has one flat in Dhanmondi, another in Gulshan, one plot in Nikunja (three katha), 615 decimals of land in Jessore, one revolver, one shotgun and three bank accounts with Tk 1.75 lakh.
