Alternatives to tree felling
Friday, 14 November 2008
IF law enforcement is the problem, why cannot the relevant ministry deploy more police to patrol the reserved forests to stop indiscriminate tree felling. The government knows that many brickfields regularly burn wood though it is prohibited. As Barapukuria coal is available, it should be a better alternative for the brickfields. In the countryside, solar power can replace firewood for cooking and heating.
Solar panels have been introduced in some rural areas. If the government facilitates the import of solar panels and other related accessories at a minimum duty, the use of these panels will rise fast in the rural areas. It could also involve no recurrent expenditure for the people in the countryside. It would ease the pressure on firewood to meet the rural population's energy needs. Power can be generated from small turbines to be run by wind power as well. It can meet the energy needs of much of the rural areas.
Side by side with tree plantation campaigns, it is equally important to depend on alternatives to firewood and stop deforestation for the needed result out of afforestation campaign.
