JOYPURHAT, Nov 16: Aman and Boro production target this year may fail in Joypurhat due to various problems.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said Aman has been cultivated in 73 thousand 8 hundred and 85 hectares of land this year whereas the target was 73 thousand 5 hundred hectares.
Rice production this season has been targeted at 196 thousand 8 hundred tonnes. DAE expected that the target would be achieved.
However, farmers of Joypurhat expressed different opinions. According to them, the production target cannot be achieved this year.
Majibur Rahman, a farmer of Ramkrishnapur village under Sadar Upazila said, "I cultivated local variety of Aman in 5 bighas of land and already harvested one bigha from where only 10 maunds of paddy has been produced whereas per bigha production was 20 maunds last year."
He also said, "I sold one maund of Aman paddy for Tk 800 last year; but this year it is only Tk 600."
Abul Kashem, farmer of the same area said, "This year Aman production is very low. We will face loss." He also said there was no sufficient rain this year. Rain is very essential for the growth of Aman plant.
Farmers of various areas of the district told the FE correspondent Aman production has been hampered this year. The major causes of low production are lack of adequate rain, use of mixed and low quality Indian SSP and MOP fertiliser insufficient input of fertiliser etc.
Moreover, damage of land fertility due to use of low quality fertiliser for years, insect attack, leaf blast decease etc also affected production.
