SYLHET, Dec 11: Farmers in the Sylhet region are in the midst of a busy and successful Aman paddy harvest. Over 80 per cent of the crop has already been harvested, according to farmers and officials from various upazilas.
Ataur Rahman Mia, a farmer from Baushi in Golapganj upazila, said that this year's yield is good, with no major calamities affecting the season. However, he expressed concern over fluctuating prices, as some middlemen and small traders have already begun buying the freshly harvested paddy directly from the fields.
An official from the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) confirmed on Wednesday that over 80 per cent of the crop has been collected so far in the region. The harvest of the much-anticipated Aman paddy is expected to conclude within the next week or two.
According to DAE sources, a total of 428,123 hectares were cultivated with T Aman paddy in the Sylhet region this year. In contrast to last year, when floods damaged 14,877 hectares of Aman paddy, the crop this season has faced no significant natural disasters.
Shebul Mia, a farmer from Golapganj upazila, also reported a trouble-free season, noting that although farmers planted around 14,000 hectares less than last year, the yield has been satisfactory.
The trade of T Aman paddy has begun in local markets, though it remains limited. Ataur Khan, a trader from Sadar upazila, noted that business would likely pick up in the next couple of weeks. DAE officials highlighted that the region has experienced a smooth cropping season. High-yielding varieties, such as BRRI dhan-49, 51, 52, and 57, continue to be popular among farmers.
