RAJSHAHI, Dec 21: Poor production of Aman paddy marked the current harvesting season in the Barind region due to scanty rainfall, change in climatic pattern, drought and pest attacks.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, a total of 1.8 million hectares of land has been brought under Aman paddy cultivation in 16 northern districts. But, due to scarcity of water and rainfall only half the target has been achieved though DAE claimed otherwise.
The growers, who used the facility of '100-hour free' water supply from the deep tube-wells offered by the government, could not recover the loss in production.
Despite poor production, the price of paddy at the local markets was very low. The farmers complained, the Aman paddy is being sold between Tk 400 and Tk 450 per maund in village hats.
They said by selling paddy at such a low rate they are incurring a loss of Tk 200 to Tk 400 per maund.
