Amin Ahmed Chy laid to rest

FE Report Veteran freedom fighter Major General (Rtd) Amin Ahmed Chowdhury, Bir Bikram, breathed his last at his Gulshan residence on Friday night. He was 67. Family members said Amin Ahmed was found in an unconscious state at his computer desk at round 11 pm. He was immediately rushed to the United Hospital, opposite to his residence, but the on-duty doctor declared him dead at 11:45 pm. Doctors said Amin Ahmed might have suffered a massive heart attack while he was writing an article on the ongoing political situation titled, "Timirer Majhe Alor Sondhane" (Search for light in the darkness). The whole article was visible on the computer screen when family members found him resting his head on the computer table. The death certificate, however, did not mention the cause of his death. Late Amin Ahmed is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter-in-law, two sisters and three brothers, and a host of relatives, friends and well wishers to mourn his death. Late Amin popularly known among his close relatives and friends as 'Peru' was born in South Anandpur village of Fulgazi thana of Feni district on February 14, 1946. He was commissioned in 2nd War Course in 1965 after receiving education in Mymensingh town. In the Liberation War in 1971, he fought against the Pakistan Army under Z force. Family members said he was seriously wounded during a fierce fighting at Kamalpur sector in Mymensingh district under the leadership of Ziaur Rahman as sector commander. With grievous wounds, he was sent to Assam for treatment and had been in India till the end of the war. After independence of the country, Amin Ahmed Chowdhury was honoured with Bir Bikram award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the country's freedom struggle and was sent to the then East Germany for better treatment. He was made commanding officer of 16 East Bengal Regiment after the Independence. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and many distinguished persons and institutions expressed deep shock at the death of Amin Ahmed Chowdhury and conveyed sympathies with the members of the bereaved family. Two namaj-e-janaza of the deceased were held at the Central Mosque in Cantonment after Johr prayer and at Azad Mosque in Gulshan after Asr prayer. He was buried at Banani graveyard with full state honour. Late Amin Ahmed Chowdhury had held various coveted posts in the government. He was managing director of Muktijoddha Kalyan Trust during 1986-89. Besides, he was the chairman of Bangladesh Tea Board. He retired in 2002 after serving the nation's ambassador to Oman from 1995. He was also honoured by Sultan of Oman with 'Al Noman' award. Late Amin Ahmed Chowdhury was also the chairman of the Retired Army Welfare Association (RAWA) Club, independent Director of East Land Insurance. He was also a member of the jury board of The Financial Express-Standard Chartered Bank CSR Award. In recent days, he was mostly involved in social work and writing articles and political columns for different media including The Financial Express. Besides, he had been a successful organizer of SAF Games twice in the country. Qul Khawani of the deceased will be held after Magrib prayer at Azad Mosque tomorrow (Monday).
