Amu asks owners to relocate tanneries on schedule

Industries minister Amir Hossain Amu Thursay urged the tannery factory owners to relocate their industrial units to the tannery industrial estate in Savar within the stipulated time, reports BSS.
"They would be forced through legal process to relocate their factories, if those are not shifted within the stipulated time," he said speaking at a meeting with tannery owners, construction firm representatives and officials concerned at Savar tannery industrial estate.
Dr M Enamur Rahman, MP, Industries Ministry secretary-in-charge M Farhad Uddin, Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) chairman Ahmad Hossain Khan, and Tannery Industrial Estate project director M Sirajul Haider, were present at the meeting, among others, said an official release.
The industries minister said tannery is an emerging industrial sector in the country.
There are scopes to earn more foreign currencies from this sector than the garment sector, he added.
He urged the factory owners to shift their tanneries within the stipulated time to make use of the sector's export opportunities. The meeting was told that the central effluent treatment plant (CETP) would come into operation by June 30.
Out of 155 industrial units, which got allocation of plots in Savar tannery industrial estate, 152 have so far submitted their layout plans. All the layouts have been approved.
A total of 149 industrial units have started the process of construction at their respective sites.
