Amu promises smooth power supply to fertiliser factories

Industries minister Amir Hossain Amu Wednesday directed the authority to take stringent administrative measures to curb wastage and irregualrities in the fertiliser factories under Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC).
He also promised to ensure uninterrupted power supply in the fertiliser factories to keep the production smooth.
The minister noted that the fertiliser factories should get priority in gas supply for the sake of national food security.
Mr Amu was speaking at a meeting with the BCIC representatives at the secretariate office.
The minister said prudent measures have to be taken to start operartion in the closed factories under BCIC. Terming Dhaka Leather Company a potential unit, the minister said the ministry will respond positively if BCIC proposes to make the closed factories operational.
However BCIC officials informed the minister that 1.43 million metric tonne Urea fertilsier has been supplied to farmers till January of FY 2013-14. The amount was 1.24 milion metric ton during the corresponding period of last fiscal. There is a stock of 0.77 million metric ton urea with the governemnt which indicates there will be no shortage of urea fertiliser during teh Irri-Boro season this year.
It was informed in the meeting that the Chittagong Chemical Complex (CCC) will start operation again by December this year. A project worth Tk 1.14 billion is under implementation with the own finance of BCIC in this regard. Besides a study is underway on setting up of a fertiliser factory with modern technology at Ghorashal aimed to save energy.
