An attempt to frustrate new regional alignment?
Tuesday, 19 May 2026
I wouldn't call it a change of heart but more of a new approach or tactical manoeuvre compelled by the new geopolitical and strategic scenario surfacing not only in the Subcontinent but in the whole world, the Middle East in particular. With Iran standing firm after the combined onslaught of the supposedly formidable U.S and the Zionist forces against her for close to two months and Pakistan emerging as an eye-catching power to be reckoned with, as opposed to India's failing economy and her treacherous betrayal of Iran by openly siding with Israel in form and content, India's ambition for attaining the status of a super power has fallen apart.
A former Indian diplomat, in line with her track record, had kept no secret about her strong stand against so called Islamist militancy and insurgent groups allegedly operating from Bangladeshi territory. Her belligerent disposition against Bangladesh has been evident in her discourses while assigned to Bangladesh as India's envoy and also on multiple other platforms. The fact that she has been overly interventionist and dismissive of Bangladesh's sensitivities, especially on issues like NRC and citizenship concern, border killings, Indian regional dominance, Bangladesh's domestic politics, trade imbalances and water sharing of common rivers are grounds enough to view her overtures with suspicion.
While the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between BD and Pakistan is aimed at establishing a formal framework for intelligence-sharing and security cooperation primarily targeting narcotics trafficking, money laundering and cross-border crimes, there certainly lies a bright scope for cooperation in defence and national security intelligence as well.
I have no knowledge about any existing or planned security guarantee being provided by India to Bangladesh as claimed by some top officials privy to inside information.
The Indian diplomat in question is a close confidant of the racist Hindutva regime. There are enough plausible reasons to believe her thoughts resonate with the scheme of the south block in New Delhi. And as such the ostensible benign gesture made by her is in all probability a feigned beckoning aimed at undermining the new alignment being pursued by Bangladesh, Pakistan, China and predictably Turkey.
