An experiment with high value crops in Habiganj

SYLHET, Feb 23: Rajib Kumar Das, an MBA, has started farming of some high value crops, alongside paddy cultivation in a village under Lakhai upazila of Habiganj.
Bachelor in Computer Application from Visva-Bharati University in India, Rajib did MBA from a private university in Dhaka in 2013.
He said he ventured in farming of capsicum in a 42-decimal plot spending Tk 65,000. He expects to make a good profit from 5400 plants as the harvest will be started within a few days.
He also expects to get about 2,000 kgs of carrot this season.
Meanwhile, he also cultivated tomato in six decimals of land spending Tk 7,000 and made a profit of Tk 30,000.
Besides, in a 35-decimal of marshy plot, Rajib cultivated high yielding variety of creeper arum. "I will be able to earn at least Tk 35,000 from the vegetable", the young and educated farmer said.
"These crops are more profitable than paddy farming", Rajib said, adding, "I regularly go to the local DAE office for suggestion necessary for the farming."
Rajib hails from Derai upazila of Sunamganj, but his family owns lands in Lakhai also. He said taking early measures to combat pests and diseases is important.
Additional Director of DAE, Sylhet division, Krishna Chandra Hore, saidthe country's agri sector will be benefited if young and educated people like Rajib come and contribute here.
