FE Report
Ananda Shipyard, a leading ocean-going shipbuilding company in the country, will hand over six ferries and boats worth US$ 8.0 million to the government of Mozambique Thursday next.
This was disclosed by the company at a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) premises in the city.
Shipping Adviser MA Matin is expected to attend as chief guest at the handing-over ceremony to be held at the company's shipyard at Meghnaghat in Narayanganj.
Addressing the press conference, its managing director Afroza Bari said her company will formally handover the ferries to the officials of the Mozambique government on the day.
Ananda took order for building the ferries and boats over one year back.
The ceremony will coincide with laying of keels for two 5500 deadweight tonnes (dwt) cargo vessels and cutting of plates of two similar dwt multipurpose cargo vessels ordered by Germany.
With the handing over of the ferries to the Mozambique government, the number of ships and ferries exported by the company will stand at seven.
Afroza said her company will export its eighth ships in January next.
Stella Maris, built by Ananda, was the first ship exported to Denmark few months back.
Afroza said the ship building companies need at least 30 percent cash incentive for further growth of the industry.
"We will be able to make Bangladesh a ship-building nation if the government provides us cash incentives, withdraw 25 per cent bank guarantee provision needed for import of raw materials," Afroza added.
She said her company has, so far, secured export orders for 34 ships at a total contract value of $ 373.50 million.
Ananda chairman Abdullahel Bari and director finance Alauddin A Majid were, among others, present at the press conference.
