Ancient wells in Gaibandha still operating

OUR CORRESPNDENT | Tuesday, 13 May 2025

GAIBANDHA, May 12: A traditional well (Indira) is still operative at Naldanga Bazar in Sadullapur upazila of the district, providing fresh drinking water to local people.
The wells of rural heritage, which were once the only source of drinking water in rural areas, are now almost extinct in modern society.
Deep tube-wells or water pumps are used to get underground water for irrigation, drinking and other usages across the country.
But, the wells are once very popular and an effective medium of drinking water to everyone in villages.
These wells are now completely unknown to the new generation. In the eighties of the eight upazilas of Gaibandha district, almost everyone living in the remote rural areas used well water in the village to use a few families for drinking water.
However, the villagers have now left the use of well water long before getting deep tube-wells.
There is a lot of hardship and risk to lift the well. In each upazila of the district, some of the houses were found in the wells, they were abandoned, inadvertently neglected. They are no longer using that well.
Environmental lovers say well water is always cold. Covering the mouth of the well does not waste water. Nevertheless, some are still in the memory of the first day of meditation on the first day to bring in a surgical treatment or any other need to bring well water to a far village. Although it is difficult to get the well, the old people still think the most pure water is the well. Maybe, some of these people have witnessed the time.
Somewhere in the chest there are a few wells on the chest. Nevertheless, many of the well-faced wells in the hands of the wells are also abandoned due to lack of reform.
Imam Md. Asgar Ali of Chokbarul Jame Masjid of Badiakhali Union of Gaibandha Sadar upazila told The Financial Express that the well water was good for all time.
There is no arsenic and iron in the well. So, well water is still safe. Bayam is also done to pick up well water.
There were many wells in our village and in the neighborhood. The wells are extinct today with the touch of modernity.
