Animal husbandry alleviates poverty of char people

RANGPUR, May 28 (BSS): State Minster for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Alhaj Mashiur Rahman Ranga, MP, has said animal husbandry has been effectively alleviating poverty of the marginal char people.
"Cow fattening and quick-growing grass farming and marketing have already become very effective ventures for the extremely poor people living in the hardly reachable and remote char areas in creating job opportunities and changing their fortune," he said.
He was addressing a inaugural ceremony of the 'Livestock Technology Fair 2015' organised at Bhanga Bazaar Market on the Teesta riverbed under Mornea union in Gangachara upazila in the district on Wednesday afternoon as the chief guest.
The Char Business Centres (CBCs) of Mornea, Narasingha, Binbinia, Paschim Echlee, Purbo Echlee and Char Chatura organised the fair under the Integrated Meat and Fodder Market Development (IMFMP) Project under assistance of International Development Enterprise (iDE)-Bangladesh.
The Chars Livelihoods Programme (CLP) has been implementing the project with the assistance of UK-based Department for International Development (DFID), Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) and government of Bangladesh.
The iDE-Bangladesh has been working as co-facilitator of CLP for enhancing livestock sector in char areas to increase production of meat, milk, high yielding variety, quick-growing and nutritious jumbo grass and market management development.
Different companies and local entrepreneurs set up stalls in the fair demonstrating healthier cattle-heads and quick-growing grasses to disseminate latest technologies among char people on animal husbandry, cow-fattening, grass cultivation and marketing.
With chairman of Mornea union parishad Abdul Hakim in the chair, Divisional Deputy Director of the Department of Livestock Dr Shahidul Islam, Regional Director of Agriculture Information Service Centre Abu Sayem and Gangachara Upazila Nirbahi Officer Tauhidul Islam attended the fair as the special guests.
