RANGPUR, Nov 28: The Rangpur Zoo is losing its attraction to the visitors as a good number of animals died in the last few months.
According to sources, a total of four peacocks died in the last ten days. Of them, one died on November 18 and three others on November 20.
Sources said the birds died of Ranikhet disease. One lion died on June 7 and another lion on November 16 last.
Meanwhile, a group of monkeys escaped from the cages of the zoo and strayed into the nearby locality as they were not fed properly, an official said requesting anonymity.
"The birds died as they were supplied sub-standard and stale food. Though they were supposed to get fresh wheat and ripe fruits, they were given stale wheat and fruits everyday", he added.
A number of cages have been remaining empty for the last couple of months turning the zoo into a charmless place.
When asked about supplying substandard food, Abul Kashem, curator of the zoo said he is not aware of the matter.
