Annisul's panel sweeps FBCCI polls

Election of president, senior vice president and vice president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) will be held today (Wednesday) as the panel led by Annisul Huq swept Monday's election results.
Annisul Huq's panel secured a crushing victory over his rival MA Rouf Chowdhury-led panel in the biennial election.
The winning panel grabbed 19 posts of directors out of 24, while the Rouf panel won only the remaining five posts, according to the official announcement.
However, a total of 38 FBCCI directors will elect their president, one senior vice president and one vice president for the term of 2007-09 at 4:00 pm today.
While talking to the FE, Chairman of the FBCCI Election Board Ali Ashraf said the board of directors will elect their president, senior vice president and vice president.
'We have already served notices to the directors to assemble at the FBCCI board room by 4:00 pm,' he added.
He also said he will prefer secret balloting to elect president, adding, 'We prefer secret balloting as symbol of democracy if we get more than one candidates for the post.'
The FBCCI Election Board said nomination for the president must be submitted by 2:30 pm Wednesday (today).
Earlier on Monday the biennial election of the FBCCI took place peacefully with a turnout of 93 per cent voters.
Some 1,441 out of 1,551 voters cast their votes, of which 1,135 out of 1,235 association group voters and 306 out of 316 chamber group voters exercised their franchise.
The apex trade body's polls took place to elect 24 directors - 12 from the chamber group and 12 from the association group for its 38-member executive board.
Of the remaining 14 directors, seven were nominated by the country's seven leading chambers and another seven nominated by seven leading associations.
In the chamber group, Annisul-led panel captured 11 out of 12 FBCCI director posts and in the association group the panel won eight seats out of 12.
A total of 22 candidates vied for 12 director posts allocated for the association group and 27 vied for the same number of posts for the chamber group.
The directors, elected from the association group are Obaidur Rahman of Aluminium Ware Manufacturers Association, Shafquat Haider of Bangladesh Association of Soaftware and Information Services, Fakhrul Islam Shova of Bangladesh Dress Makers Association, Jashim Uddin of Bangladesh Plastic Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Association, Mohammed Jalal Uddin of Bangladesh Bread Biscuit-o-Confectionary, Anwar Hossain of Jewellery Manufacturers and Exporters Association, MA Rouf Chowdhury of Bangladesh Vegetable Oil Refiners and Vanaspati Manufacturers Association, Abdul Hoque of Bangladesh Reconditioned Vehicles Importers and Dealers Association, Abul Alam Chowdhury of Bangladesh Craft and Giftware Exporters Association, Mir Nizam Uddin Ahmed of Bangladesh Electric Association, Alhaj Belayet Hossain of Bangladesh Chemical and Perfumery Merchant Association and Dildar Ahmed of Bangladesh Jewellers Samity.
The directors, elected from association group, are Golam Dastagir Gazi of Gazipur Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Abul Kasem Ahmed of Tangail Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Md Rajjab Sharif of Bangladesh Chamber of Industries, Md Bazlur Rahman of Narayanganj Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Md Kohinoor Islam of Munshiganj Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Kamaluddin Ahmed of Cox's Bazar Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Md Shamsul Alam of Jessore Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Bijoy Kumar Kejriwal of Kushtia Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Md Serajul Haque of Lalmonirhat Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Md Aminul Bari of Jaipurhat Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Shamsul Haque of Naogaon Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Mahbub Alam Runu of Manikganj Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
