Another blogger stabbbed to death Two ‘attackers’ held
FE Report | Tuesday, 31 March 2015
A blogger was stabbed to death in broad daylight in Tejgaon area of the capital Monday by assailants who told police they did it on duty calls from religious faith.
The deceased was identified as Washiqur Rahman Babu, 27, a second young man slain within little over a month for freethinking blogging.
He came under the brutal attack at about 10:10am at Begunbari Dipikar Morh under Tejgaon Industrial Area, Deputy Commissioner of DMP (Tejgaon Zone) Biplob Kumar Sarkar told the FE.
The police official said the victim, with severe stabs, was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where on-duty doctors declared him dead shortly after arrival. "Two of the three attackers were caught red- handed by locals and handed over to the police," the DC of metro police said.
They gave their identities as Zikrullah and Ariful Islam, students of Hathazari Madrasa in Chittagong and Darus Ulum Madrasa in the capital's Mirpur area respectively.
Another attacker, named Taher, managed to escape the scene, he said, adding that drives were on to rum him in.
Immediate after the arrest of the two, Tejgaon police organised a press briefing where officials claimed that the blogger was killed following a "conflict over ideological difference".
This assassination follows a similar murder of blogger-cum-writer Avijit Roy on February 26 last on the crowded Dhaka University campus, which sparked widespread criticisms from home and abroad.
Meanwhile, the European Union through its country mission condemned the brutal assault and killing of blogger Washiqur Rahman.
"One month after the killing of blogger Avijit Roy, this vile aggression again calls for the EU to reiterate its strong attachment to freedom of expression which constitutes an essential element of a democratic society," says a statement posted on facebook by the Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh.
The EU Ambassador expressed his condolences to Mr Rahman's family.
A bdnews24 report said this time, too, the assailants mainly targeted Babu's head and neck like in the previous attacks on Professor Humayun Azad, blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider, AKM Shafiul Islam and writer-blogger Avijit Roy.
DC Sarkar said during preliminary interrogations, the two claimed that Rahman was killed for his writings on religious issues.
