KUSHTIA, Aug 29 (bdnews24.com): A suspected extremist, identified as a top Gono Bahini figure, was killed in a crossfire with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and police early Saturday, in the backdrop of deteriorating law and order in the district, law enforcers said.
This is the fourth such death in a week.
Saturday's shooting left 38-year-old Babul Joaddar, also known as Babul Member, the top local leader of outlawed extremist group Gono Bahini, dead on the spot, the police said.
Babul was the chief associate of Gono Bahini's head Ajibor Rahman, said the police.
The shootout took place near a 'beel' (water body) in Bamon village near the Islami University in Kushtia's Sadar Upazila, said the officer-in-charge (OC) of Islami University Police Station.
A team of RAB-12 and police went to the beel, adjacent to the Bittipara-Patikabari Road, at around 4:00am after a tip-off on a meeting of the outlawed group there, he said.
Sensing the presence of law enforcers, suspects opened fire. RAB and police also fired back. At one stage extremists managed to flee the scene. Later, the police found the dead body of Babul on the spot.
The OC said a firearm and nine rounds of ammunition were recovered from the spot.
