Anti-cartoon protests go into third week

Saturday, 6 October 2007

Three Islamic organisations Friday protested the publication of a rogue cartoon strip by Bangla daily Prothom Alo near Baitul Mokarram, reports bdnews24.com.
About 100 activists took to the streets at about 1:30 pm after Jum'a prayers near the north gate of the national mosque.
This is the third Friday in a row that Islamists have demonstrated against the cartoon carried by the daily's satire magazine, which allegedly hurt religious sensibilities.
Islami Chhatra Majlish, Al Quds Bangladesh Committee and Bangladesh Khelafat Jubo Andolon protesters shouted slogans against Prothom Alo.
The Al Quds Bangladesh Committee set the flags of the United States and Israel on fire.
They chanted, "Take up arms, free Baitul Mukaddes," referring to Islamic holy places in Jerusalem.
Activists of the Islami Chhatra Majlish chanted slogans against the Prothom Alo and stamped copies of the daily with their feet.
The processions started and ended at the national mosque's north gate after parading as far as Paltan crossing.
One protester's clothes caught on fire as fellow demonstrators burnt US and Israeli flags. Later it was put out.
The protesters demanded that the Prothom Alo be banned.
