Anti-corruption drive to be geared up from Dec

The crusader against corruption, ACC chairman Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury, Thursday indicated an escalated move against the high-profile corruption suspects as he said a new beginning in the drive to curb corruption dawned in the victory month of December, reports UNB.
Mashhud made the remark at a view-exchange meeting with the civil society on the 'Role and Task for Curbing Corruption', organised by Dhaka district administration at Shilpakola Academy.
He noted that honest courage and belief is needed first for preventing corruption, not theoretical discussion, consultation and advice. "Everyone has to move forward to rid Bangladesh of the bad repute of corruption."
The ACC chief stressed the need for translating the dreams of freedom fighters into reality by curbing corruption by the day when the International Corruption-free Day will be observed on December 9.
"We've to prove that we're able to prevent corruption," he told his audience from the administration in the district wherein lies the national capital where the vice had spawned and spread to upset the country's sociopolitical setup until the January 11 changeover.
Responding to a query, he said the Commission is thinking on how to involve the youth society most in curbing corruption. "When we will arrange meeting against corruption in grassroots level, we'll give them most priority," the Commission chairman said.
About anti-corruption stickers, he said the watchdog body is thinking about publishing anti-corruption stickers like the 'No smoking' sticker and it would be posted first at the Commission's office.
Hasan Mashhud said the ACC would spend the next year arranging anti-corruption meeting at upazila and union levels.
Dhaka Divisional Commissioner Ikram Ahmed told the function that corruption has percolated into all sectors. "Let's make a promise for not doing and supporting any corruption. It should be the main slogan in the victory month of December," he said.
DIG of Dhaka Range Nazmul Haque informed that a rectification drive is continuing in the police department. So far, 9,000 senior police officials, including SP, DIG, AIG, have been suspended for corruption.
"Now the police department is working to establish themselves as a public welfare and service-oriented organisation. We must unite in order to attack the corrupt," said the regional police chief.
He declared that no one could free Bangladesh from corruption but its citizens.
Dhaka Bar Association general secretary Advocate Golam Mostofa, teachers Kamrul Huda and Ziarat Ali and freedom fighter Khandoker Hamid Ranju, among others, also spoke at the function.
