Anti-monga paddy harvest begins

NILPHAMARI, Sept 28: Harvesting of short duration anti monga paddy BRRI-33,BRRI-139 and BINA-has already begun in a Nilphamari district and it would gain momentum very soon. Cultivation of this variety paddy is increasing gradually in Nilphamari district. Department of Agriculture Extension sources said a total of 20,000 hectares of land had been brought under this variety of paddy cultivation across six upazilas of the district this year with a production target of 2.5 metric tonne per hectare.
These short duration paddy is being cultivated extensively to create job opportunities for the labourers during the lean period of Ashwin and Kartik months. Cultivation of these varieties is also a model monga mitigation programme of the government as this could be harvested within 110 days from the date of transplantation of the seeds and it could be harvested even within 100 days if drum seeded or direct seeded method is applied.
