Antivenom required at union level

Sunday, 17 August 2025

Every year, many lives are lost to snakebites during the monsoon season, and incidents are also reported at other times, especially in rural areas. A lack of awareness, widespread superstition, and reluctance to seek modern medical treatment make the situation worse.
Instead of going to hospitals, many victims turn to witch doctors or shamans, which often leads to fatal consequences due to incorrect treatment.
Unfortunately, the supply of antivenom in hospitals remains far below demand, and there is no coordinated plan to address the crisis. Misconceptions about snakebites in society also discourage people from seeking proper care.
To reduce mortality, awareness campaigns on first aid should be conducted at the union health center and community clinic levels. At the same time, the supply of antivenom for poisonous snakebites must be ensured. Stockpiles should be maintained at village clinics and government hospitals. Above all, strengthening public awareness can help prevent avoidable deaths from snakebites.
