Ruling Awami League’s candidate Anupam Shahjahan Joy won the Tangail-8 by-elections on Saturday. Anupam, son of late Shawkat Momen Shajahan, won the by-election bagging 75,960 votes out of 307,382, while his nearest rival independent candidate Abdul Malek, known as an AL rebel, polled 71,408. Assistant returning officer Habiba Akhter announced the election results on Saturday night. Earlier, voting in Tangail-8 (Basail-Sakhipur) by-elections was held from 8am to 4pm on Saturday without any break. The Election Commission (EC) suspended voting in one polling station (Centre No-91) out of 117, EC secretariat sources said. Three others who contested the by-polls are Sadek Siddiqui of JP (Manju), Principal Abu Sayeed (AL rebel) and Liaqat Ali. The seat (Basail-Sakhipur) fell vacant following the death of AL MP Shawkat Momen Shajahan on January 20, according to a news agency.
