Anwarul for training of local govt representatives to boost efficiency

Adviser for Local Govern-ment Rural Development (LGRD) and Cooperatives Anwarul Iqbal stressed on imparting effective training to the representatives of the local government bodies for enhancing their efficiency and leadership quality.brThe LGRD adviser said this while speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural session of a workshop on 'Annual Work-Plan for 2008-09' of National Institute for Local Government (NILG) at Sher-e-Banglanagar in the city Sunday, reports BSS.brBetter local government system makes special contribution to fulfilling aspirations of the people, the adviser said.brHe underscored the need for proper training to build efficient and people-oriented local government.brThe NILG will hold 1,004 training courses and eight workshops in the current fiscal year.brHe said developing relations between the government and the people was essential to ensure good governance. brThe local government had an important role to play in this connection, he added.brThe adviser said an ordinance had already been promulgated to form a local government commission to free the local government from the influence of the centre. brThe commission would start functioning after the approval of the President, he said adding its office would be set up temporarily at the NILG.brThe workshop was informed that training of elected representatives would begin in the shortest possible time after completion of elections to the local government bodies.brChaired by Joint Secretary of Local Government Division Mizanur Rahman, the inaugural session was addressed, among others, by Local Government Division Secretary Sheikh Khurshid Alam and NILG Acting Director General M Nazibur Rahman.brLocal government representatives, government officials, and representatives of development agencies and NGOs took part in the workshop.
