Appeal against conviction of four RU teachers filed

RAJSHAHI, Dec 9 (UNB): An appeal was filed with the District and Sessions Judge's Court here today (Sunday) against the conviction of four teachers of Rajshahi University (RU) for breaking Emergency Powers Rules.
Appellants' lawyer Aslam Sarker filed the appeal with the court of AR Masud at about 12:45pm. Hearing of the appeal will be held on December 27.
A Speedy Trial Tribunal on December 4 sentenced the RU teachers to two years rigorous imprisonment for violating provisions of the Emergency Powers Rules on the campus following students' unrest at Dhaka University.
The convicted teachers are former chairman of the Management Department Associate Professor Moloy Kumar Bhowmik and assistant professors of the Mass Communication and Journalism Department Dulal Chandra Biswas, Selim Raza Newton and Abdullah Al Mamun.
The court also fined the convicts Tk 1,000, in default, to suffer one more month in jail.
Two other teachers of the university-former vice-chancellor and also member of the Awami League Advisory Council Prof Dr Saidur Rahman Khan and Applied Physics and Electronics Department Professor and convener of Progressive Teachers' Forum Dr Abdus Sobhan-were acquitted of the charge.
