Appeal hearing on Bangabandhu murder trial to begin on Oct 5
Tuesday, 25 August 2009
Hearing on the long-pending appeals of the five former army officers sentenced to death in the Bangabandhu murder case will begin at the Supreme Court on October 5, reports UNB.
Chamber court of Justice M Muzammel Hossain Monday passed the orders following a submission by Attorney General Mahbubey Alam.
Earlier on the day, a regular bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice MM Ruhul Amin apparently reprimanded AG Mahbubey Alam and special state counsel Anisul Huq for mentioning the matter ignoring the set court rules.
Twelve of the condemned persons had their death sentences upheld by the High Court's final verdict on April 30, 2001.
Five of them, who are now in jail, filed the appeals with the Appellate Division against the HC confirmation of their capital punishment.
The condemned prisoners now behind the bars are Lt Col (sacked) Syed Faruque Rahman, Lt Col (retd) Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, Lt Col (retd) Muhiuddin Ahmed, Lt Col (retd) AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed (lancer) and Maj (retd) Bazlul Huda.
