Apu again jailed for five years

Wednesday, 11 June 2008

Already jailed for 32 years, Rajib Siraj Apu, son of former minister and BNP leader Shajahan Siraj, was Tuesday again sentenced to five years' rigorous imprisonment for money laundering, reports UNB.

Passing the sentence, judge of a special court M Ashraf Hossain also fined him about Tk 88 million which was confiscated in favour of the state.

Apu was tried in absentia, as were his parents earlier, as the entire family has gone into hiding to dodge the ongoing anti-corruption drives, launched in the interim period.

Earlier on August 29, a special court had sentenced the Shajahan Siraj couple along with their son Apu to eight years' imprisonment each, with fines, for individual income-tax evasion.
