The Association of Private Universities of Bangladesh (APUB) has asked the government to cancel the proposed 'Private University Bill- 2009' 'as it will breach the autonomy of the private universities.
APUB Chairman CM Shafi Sami at a press conference at the city's National Press Club Tuesday said the basic foundation of private universities would be changed if the proposed bill is enacted into a law.
Shafi Sami also said, the administrative authority to run the private universities would go to the government, the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the accreditation council which is contrary to the Private University Act 1992.
"We object to the proposed bill and make an appeal to the government to review it and bring necessary amendments to the existing rules for the greater interest of higher education", the APUB chairman said.
APUB Secretary General Prof M Alimullah Miyan said the government could take legal action if any university conducts business in the name of higher education but it shouldn't place the private universities under full control of the UGC and the accreditation council.
APUB Vice-Chairman Abul Quasem Haider, World University of Bangladesh VC Prof Abdul Mannan Chowdhury and Northern University Bangladesh VC Prof Shamsul Haq, among others, attended the press conference.
