Aquatic Food Safety Centre kicks off early next year

Saturday, 20 November 2010

Aquaculture and Aquatic Food Safety Centre will formally kick off its activities at the beginning of next year, said Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation (BSFF) Chairman Syed Mahmudul Huq.
Mr Huq said, "The centre will provide training on good aquaculture practices and training on compliance with code of conduct for the major stakeholders of the aquaculture industry value chain and operation, and for laboratory operation."
"The centre will be set up in the capital and for this Fishery Products Business Promotion Council under Ministry of Commerce will provide a fund worth around US$ 2.0 million supported by USAID."
The University of Maryland, the USA, and BSFF signed an agreement in April this year for joint research and training activities, exchange of scholars and experts for seminars, conferences and research activities for the development of production and import of quality shrimps.
Three aspects such as food safety, environmental sustainability and social responsibility, which are the pressing demands from shrimp importers, would be mitigated under the deal.
Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (JIFSAN), a joint initiative of US Food and Drug Administration and University of Maryland and BSFF, has already initiated a training of trainers programme for the implementation of 'Good Aquaculture Practices' throughout Bangladesh.
This training would ensure food safety, environmental sustainability and social responsibility both in terms of human and labour rights.
The BSFF chairman said this centre would work as a network of training institutes in the region with a goal to build capacity of both foreign regulators and manufacturers in the use of international best practices in food safety management to better assure the safety of the food supply chain in the region.
He expressed the hope that if Bangladesh could maintain its food quality, no other country could compete with her in this vitally important export trade.
"We can easily bring back the golden time for the shrimp sector," he added.
