Aramit Ltd, the country's leading manufacturer of asbestos roofing materials, drainage pipes and ceiling insulating sheets, has initiated production from its second manufacturing unit doubling the production capacity, company officials said Monday.
With the installation of its second unit worth Tk 145 million the production capacity of Aramit Ltd rose to 6.0 million square meters per year from the previous 3.0 million square meters.
"We have been conducting trial productions in our newly installed manufacturing unit for about a month," Aramit Ltd chairman Saifuzzaman Chowdhury told the FE Monday.
Commercial operation of the second unit would start very soon, said Mr Chowdhury, who is also the managing director of the company.
Aramit Ltd is the country's lone asbestos item manufacture and its demand is growing rapidly with the industrial boom across the country, the company secretary Ibrahim Khalil said.
Asbestos materials have become increasingly popular among the manufacturers and builders across the country because of its resistance to heat, electrical and chemical damage, sound absorption and tensile strength.
Asbestos is a set of six naturally occurring silicate minerals exploited commercially for their desirable usages.
Apart from production of its own items Aramit Ltd is the prime sponsor of other sister concern companies of the Aramit group having significant portion of shares of Aramit Cement, Aramit Footwear Ltd, Aramit Steel Pipes, Aramit Thai Aluminium and Aramit Power Ltd, said the company chairman.
"Aramit Ltd has 20 per cent stake in the Aramit Cement, 42 per cent share in Aramit Thai Aluminium, 33 per cent share in Aramit Steel Pipes, 25 per cent share in Aramit Footwear and 67 per cent share in Aramit Power Ltd," the company stated in its latest annual report signed by the then chairman Ziaul Haque Khondker
In its report Mr Khondker, who is now the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), had unveiled the company's long-term plan to diversify its business activities.
Aramit Ltd is the oldest of the Aramit group of companies, which was established with the technical collaboration of Team S A Luxemburg in 1963.
In recognition of quality of its products Aramit Ltd received the prestigious 10th Golden America Award for quality in 1998.
